SE Ranking vs Ahrefs comparison: balance scale with a link chain and a price tag

Short answer

Both start at $129 a month, so this one comes down to limits. SE Ranking Core tracks 2,000 keywords daily, has no research credits and comes with a 14-day trial that doesn't ask for a card. Ahrefs Lite tracks 750 keywords and caps each user at 1,000 credits a month, but it's still the tool most link builders reach for first. Pick Ahrefs if backlinks are your whole job. For everything else, SE Ranking gets you more for the same money.

What a year costs, two price calculations

These are list-price calculations, not quotes. Your checkout may differ with taxes or promotions.

  • Solo SEO, about 2,000 tracked keywords. SE Ranking Core annual: $103.20 × 12 = $1,238.40. Ahrefs needs Standard to reach 2,000 tracked keywords: $249 × 12 = $2,988 on monthly billing.
  • Small team of 3, about 5,000 keywords. SE Ranking Growth annual includes 3 seats: $223.20 × 12 = $2,678.40. Ahrefs Advanced plus 2 extra users: ($449 + 2 × $80) × 12 = $7,308 on monthly billing.

Ahrefs' annual discount narrows the gap a little, but not by much.

Rank tracking

SE Ranking began as a rank tracker and it shows. Core checks 2,000 keywords every day by country, city or ZIP code, on desktop and mobile, with competitor tracking and scheduled reports. Ahrefs Rank Tracker is solid, but Lite starts at 750 keywords and you need Standard for 2,000.

If tracking is a big part of your work, this section alone usually settles the question. Our rank tracker guide prices the main options per 1,000 keywords.

Keyword and competitor research

Both have large keyword databases and the usual reports: difficulty, volume, SERP overview, competitor keywords and gaps. Ahrefs' database is bigger, and its keyword tools are among the best known. The catch on Lite is credits: 1,000 per user a month, and heavy research uses them up. Standard and above have unlimited credits per user.

SE Ranking makes keyword, competitor and backlink research unlimited on Core. Its database is smaller than Ahrefs', so very niche long-tail markets may show fewer suggestions.

Site audits

SE Ranking Core audits 250,000 pages a month and Growth audits 2 million. Its audit renders JavaScript, checks Core Web Vitals and runs on a schedule you set.

Ahrefs counts crawl credits: 100,000 on Lite, 500,000 on Standard and 1.5 million on Advanced. It also sells Project Boost add-ons for always-on auditing ($20/mo per project for Boost Pro). For your own sites, Ahrefs Free includes Site Audit with 170+ checks at no cost.

Both are enough for most small and mid-size sites. We compare dedicated crawlers too in our SEO audit tools guide.

AI visibility tracking

SE Ranking Core includes 25 AI prompts a day across 5 AI engines, and the company sells SE Visible as a separate tool for heavier tracking. Ahrefs Lite includes 150 prompt checks, with paid packs for more. If AI answers matter a lot to you, see our AI visibility tools guide.

API and integrations

SE Ranking includes 25,000 API credits and MCP access on Core and 100,000 on Growth. A separate 3M-credit API add-on costs $45/mo on annual billing ($48 monthly). Ahrefs keeps its full API for higher tiers and Enterprise. If you want SEO data in your own dashboards or an AI assistant without an enterprise contract, SE Ranking is the easier start.

How we compared them

In November 2026 we read both official pricing pages, plan tables and FAQs, plus SE Ranking's backlink checker and audit pages, and recorded prices, limits, users, credits, trials and refund terms. The yearly costs above are our own price calculations from list prices.

We didn't run a hands-on accuracy or index-size test for this article. Where we say Ahrefs is strong for backlinks, that reflects its focus and wide agreement among users, not our own benchmark.

Frequently asked questions

Is SE Ranking better than Ahrefs?

For value, usually yes. Both start at $129/mo, but SE Ranking Core tracks 2,000 keywords daily with unlimited research, while Ahrefs Lite tracks 750 and gives each user 1,000 credits a month. Ahrefs is the stronger pick if backlink research is your main job.

Is SE Ranking cheaper than Ahrefs?

The monthly entry price is the same, $129. SE Ranking gives 20% off annually ($103.20/mo), and its mid plan is $279 against $249 for Ahrefs Standard. The bigger gap is in limits: SE Ranking includes more tracked keywords and no research credits.

Does Ahrefs have a free trial?

No. Ahrefs says it doesn't run free trials or discounts. Site owners can use Ahrefs Free for their own verified sites. SE Ranking has a 14-day trial with no card.

Which has better backlink data, SE Ranking or Ahrefs?

Ahrefs is the long-standing favourite for link research and most SEOs treat it as the benchmark. SE Ranking reports 2.9 trillion backlinks and 411 million referring domains in its index, which is enough for most audits. We didn't run our own index comparison.

Can I use SE Ranking and Ahrefs Free together?

Yes, and it's a cheap setup. Ahrefs Free covers Site Audit and a limited Site Explorer for sites you verify, and SE Ranking handles tracking, research and competitor sites.

The verdict

Same entry price, very different limits. Ahrefs is the specialist's tool for links. SE Ranking is the better all-rounder: more keywords tracked, no credits, an included API and a trial you can start without a card. Try SE Ranking first, and add Ahrefs only if you find you need its link data.
