Ahrefs alternatives compared by price and backlink features

Short answer

The best Ahrefs alternative for most people is SE Ranking. For the same $129 a month as Ahrefs Lite you get unlimited keyword, competitor and backlink research, 2,000 daily tracked keywords and a 14-day free trial, which Ahrefs doesn't offer. Semrush is the closest like-for-like rival, and Mangools is the easiest budget pick.

Why people switch from Ahrefs

Ahrefs has excellent data. People leave because of how they pay for it.

From the Ahrefs pricing page, checked October 31, 2026:

  • Lite is $129/mo with 6 months of history, 750 tracked keywords, 150 AI prompt checks and 1,000 credits per user. Extra users are $40/mo each, up to two.
  • Standard is $249/mo. That's where 2 years of history, unlimited credits, Content Explorer and Brand Radar start.
  • Advanced is $449/mo and Enterprise $1,499/mo with an annual commitment.
  • Annual billing saves up to 17%.

Then the policies. Ahrefs says it never runs discounts or free trials. It generally doesn't refund (for monthly plans you can ask if you haven't used the service). It takes Visa, Mastercard, Amex and UnionPay, with wire transfer only for Enterprise. Pay-as-you-go credits charge automatically once you switch them on.

So the usual reasons to look elsewhere are:

  • The credit limit on Lite runs out in a busy week.
  • You can't test it before paying.
  • You need history beyond 6 months without paying $249.
  • You want more tracked keywords per dollar.

If you mostly do link research at scale, Ahrefs may still be worth it. If you do a bit of everything, keep reading.

#1

SE Ranking: best Ahrefs alternative overall

Best for: freelancers, small agencies and in-house teams that research every day.

SE Ranking matches Ahrefs Lite on price and beats it on limits. Research isn't credit-metered on Core, you track almost three times as many keywords, and you can try the whole thing for two weeks first.

The SE Ranking subscription page lists Core at $129/mo ($103.20 billed annually): 10 projects, unlimited keyword, competitor and backlink research, 2,000 keywords tracked daily, 250,000 audited pages a month, 25,000 API credits with MCP, and AI visibility tracking for 25 prompts a day. Growth is $279/mo ($223.20 annually) with 30 projects, 5,000 keywords, 3 manager seats and all-time history.

The trial is fully functional with starter limits: 10 projects, 750 tracked keywords a day, 20 AI prompts a day. SE Ranking also says you can import projects and ranking history from other platforms, and annual plans get free assisted migration.

Pros

  • No research credits to ration on Core
  • 2,000 daily tracked keywords vs 750 on Ahrefs Lite
  • 14-day free trial
  • AI visibility tracking and MCP included

Cons

  • Ahrefs' backlink index is the one many link builders trust most; compare both on your own domains
  • One manager seat on Core, and only one active session per login
  • Payments are non-refundable unless the service wasn't delivered
#2

Semrush: the closest like-for-like rival

Best for: marketers who also run ads or local campaigns.

Semrush is the only suite that goes toe to toe with Ahrefs on data size, and it covers more ground: PPC, local SEO, content and market research. It isn't cheaper, but it lets you test before you buy.

Semrush pricing: the SEO plan is $139/mo ($117.33 annually) for 5 sites and 500 daily tracked keywords. SEO + AI Search Starter is $199/mo and Pro+ $299/mo with historical data and content optimization. Extra users start at $45/mo. There's a 7-day free trial and a free plan with 10 reports a day.

Leaving Semrush instead? See Semrush alternatives, or our Semrush vs Ahrefs comparison.

Pros

  • Huge toolset beyond SEO
  • Free trial and a free plan
  • AI search tracking on Starter and up

Cons

  • Not cheaper than Ahrefs
  • Fewer tracked keywords at entry than SE Ranking
  • Extra users are expensive
#3

Mangools: best for beginners

Best for: bloggers and small site owners.

Mangools bundles a keyword tool, SERP checker, rank tracker, backlink tool (LinkMiner) and domain overview (SiteProfiler) into one simple package. It's the most approachable tool on this list.

Mangools plans start with Basic at $37.70/mo billed annually (about $61 billed monthly), with 100 keyword lookups per 24 hours, 100,000 backlink rows a month and 200 tracked keywords updated weekly. Premium is $52.70/mo and Agency $97.70/mo on annual billing; Agency adds daily rank updates. Every plan includes AI Search Watcher (500 prompts) and API/MCP access, and there's a 48-hour money-back guarantee.

Pros

  • Very easy to use
  • Cheap on annual billing
  • Backlink and keyword tools in one subscription

Cons

  • Low daily limits on Basic
  • Weekly rank updates below Agency
  • Backlink depth isn't in Ahrefs' league
#4

Moz Pro: best for link metrics people recognise

Best for: in-house marketers and consultants who report DA to clients.

Moz invented Domain Authority, and many clients still ask for it. Moz Pro gives you link research, keyword research, rank tracking and audits in a calm interface.

Moz Pro pricing: Starter $49/mo for one site; Standard $99/mo ($79 annually) for 3 sites, 300 tracked keywords and 150 AI prompts tracked weekly; Medium $143/mo and Large $239/mo on annual billing for 10 and 25 sites. There's a free trial.

Pros

  • Familiar metrics for client reports
  • Clear interface and strong learning content
  • AI prompt tracking from Standard

Cons

  • Low keyword limits for the price
  • Starter is very limited
  • Smaller toolset than SE Ranking or Semrush
#5

SpyFu: best for competitor history

Best for: PPC and SEO people who research competitors more than they build links.

SpyFu is a competitor research tool first. It shows the keywords and ads a domain has used over the years, which is handy when you want to see what worked for a rival before you copy the idea.

SpyFu pricing: Basic $39/mo with 5,000 weekly tracked keywords on one project; Pro + AI $59 for the first month, then $119/mo, with unlimited results and 15,000 keywords; Team $249/mo. API access is on every plan, annual billing saves 25%, and there's a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Pros

  • Long keyword and ad history
  • Cheap entry price
  • Easiest refund policy here

Cons

  • Backlink tools are basic next to Ahrefs
  • Weekly rank tracking
  • One tracking project on Basic
#6

Serpstat: best for small teams on a budget

Best for: small agencies that need several users.

Serpstat is a full suite (keywords, backlinks, audit, rank tracking, competitor research) priced for teams rather than individuals.

Serpstat pricing: Team is $100/mo billed annually ($1,200 upfront) with unlimited projects, 3 users, API and MCP integration. Team x2 is $169/mo and doubles the key limits (1,000 searches a day, 100,000 keyword position checks, 6 users). Agency is $410/mo. Team includes a 7-day trial and 1,500 AI visibility checks a month.

Pros

  • 3 users on the base plan
  • Unlimited projects
  • API from the first plan

Cons

  • Best price requires paying a year upfront
  • Limits are counted in daily searches and checks
#7

Ubersuggest: cheapest paid alternative

Best for: solo site owners on the smallest budget.

Ubersuggest won't replace Ahrefs for a link builder. For a single small site, though, it covers keyword ideas, a site audit, daily rank tracking and basic backlink data for very little.

Ubersuggest pricing: Individual $29/mo, $192 a year or $290 lifetime; Business $49/mo; Enterprise $99/mo. Monthly plans include a 7-day trial; lifetime plans aren't refundable. Prices are localized by country.

Pros

  • Lowest price, plus a lifetime option
  • Simple to use
  • Includes AI prompt tracking

Cons

  • Much shallower data than Ahrefs
  • Low limits per project
  • Lifetime purchase can't be refunded

  1. Free Ahrefs alternatives

For your own site, free tools cover more than most people expect. For competitors, they don't.

  • Ahrefs Free: Ahrefs' own free plan gives verified site owners limited Site Explorer and Site Audit. If you cancel a paid Ahrefs plan, you drop to this.
  • Google Search Console: your real queries, clicks, positions and a links report.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools: free search data and a backlinks report for your site.
  • Trials for competitor research: SE Ranking (14 days), Semrush (7 days), Serpstat Team (7 days). Plan your research, run it in one trial, export the results.

What each option costs over a year

Monthly prices hide the real gap. Here's the cost of one year at the entry level, using the cheapest billing each vendor lists (October 31, 2026).

Tool and planOne yearHow we got it
Ahrefs Lite, monthly$1,548$129 × 12
Ahrefs Lite, annualabout $1,285 or moreAhrefs says annual saves "up to 17%"
SE Ranking Core, annual$1,238.40$103.20 × 12
Semrush SEO, annual$1,407.96$117.33 × 12
Serpstat Team, annual$1,200paid upfront
Moz Pro Standard, annual$948$79 × 12
SpyFu Basic, monthly$468$39 × 12 (annual saves 25% more)
Mangools Basic, annual$452.40listed yearly price
Ubersuggest Individual$192 a year, or $290 oncelisted annual and lifetime prices

Two things stand out. SE Ranking Core costs a little less than Ahrefs Lite over a year while tracking 2,000 keywords instead of 750. And if your needs are small, Mangools or Ubersuggest cost a third or less of Ahrefs.

Taxes and currency conversion can change these totals, so treat them as list-price estimates.

What you lose when you leave Ahrefs

Be clear on the trade-offs before you cancel.

  • Backlink data many link builders swear by. Ahrefs runs what it calls the world's second-most active crawler. If link prospecting is your job, compare backlink counts for your own domains in a trial before switching.
  • Content Explorer and Brand Radar (on Standard and above). Brand Radar is a strong AI visibility research tool; see our AI visibility tools guide for alternatives.
  • Familiar reports. If clients expect Ahrefs screenshots, warn them.

What you won't lose: rank tracking, keyword research, site audits and competitor overviews. Every paid tool here covers those.

How to switch from Ahrefs without losing data

Ahrefs doesn't refund in general, so time the move around your billing date.

  1. Check your renewal date in Ahrefs Account Settings. When you cancel, you keep access until the end of the paid period, then drop to Ahrefs Free.
  2. Start the new tool's trial about two weeks before renewal. SE Ranking gives you 14 days, which lines up nicely.
  3. Export what you'll miss: tracked keyword lists, backlink exports for your main sites and competitors, and audit issues you haven't fixed yet. Exports use your plan limits, so do it early.
  4. Import keywords and projects into the new tool. SE Ranking has built-in import for projects and ranking history; annual plans also get free assisted migration.
  5. Compare a few numbers for domains you know well. Backlink counts will differ between any two tools, since each crawler sees a different slice of the web. Look for trends, not identical totals.
  6. Cancel Ahrefs once you're happy, and switch off pay-as-you-go credits so nothing charges automatically.
  7. Keep Ahrefs Free connected to your own site. It costs nothing and gives you a second opinion on your links.

How to choose

  • You research all day and hate credit limits: SE Ranking.
  • You also run Google Ads or local SEO: Semrush.
  • You're a beginner or blogger: Mangools.
  • Clients want Domain Authority: Moz Pro.
  • You mostly study competitors' history: SpyFu.
  • You have a small team: Serpstat.
  • You have almost no budget: Ubersuggest or the free stack.

Whatever you pick, test it on two or three domains you know well. If the numbers look strange for sites where you know the truth, they'll be strange for competitors too.

How we evaluated these tools

On October 31, 2026 we read each vendor's official pricing page (rendering JavaScript where prices load late) and recorded list prices, annual discounts, credit and lookup limits, tracked keywords, seats, trials, refund rules and payment methods. We focused on what Ahrefs users say pushes them away (credits, no trial, price of history) and checked how each alternative handles those points. We also reviewed the questions people search with "ahrefs alternative," such as free options and cheaper picks.

We earn a commission from some links (SE Ranking, Mangools). Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz, SpyFu, Serpstat and Ubersuggest are plain links. Prices change often, so check before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to Ahrefs?

SE Ranking for most people. Its $129 Core plan includes unlimited keyword, competitor and backlink research plus 2,000 daily tracked keywords, while Ahrefs Lite at the same price caps credits and tracks 750 keywords.

Is there a free alternative to Ahrefs?

For your own site, yes: Ahrefs Free, Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools all show backlinks or search data at no cost. For researching competitors, you'll need a trial or a paid tool.

Is Semrush better than Ahrefs?

They're close. Semrush is broader (PPC, local, market research) and has a free trial; Ahrefs is often preferred for backlinks. Both cost from about $129 to $139 a month at entry level.

Why is Ahrefs so expensive?

Ahrefs runs its own crawler and large databases, sells Brand Radar and extra users separately, and doesn't discount. Lite is $129/mo and Standard, where Content Explorer and Brand Radar start, is $249/mo.

Does Ahrefs have a free trial?

No. Ahrefs' pricing page says it never runs discounts and offers Ahrefs Free instead, which gives site owners limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access.

What's the cheapest Ahrefs alternative?

Ubersuggest at $29/mo, or a $290 lifetime plan. Mangools starts at $37.70/mo on annual billing and SpyFu at $39/mo.

The bottom line

Ahrefs is a great tool with strict terms. If the credit limits, missing trial or $249 jump for history are what bother you, SE Ranking fixes all three at the same entry price. Choose Semrush if you need the widest toolset, and Mangools if you want something simple and cheap.
