What does an AI visibility tool actually measure?
An AI visibility tool runs your chosen prompts through AI assistants on a schedule and records what comes back. You get three things:
- Mentions: did the answer name your brand, and in what position?
- Citations: which URLs did the assistant link to as sources?
- Share of voice: how often you appear compared with competitors across all your prompts.
Most tools add sentiment (is the mention positive?) and a list of the sources AI engines lean on in your niche. That last one is often the most useful, because it tells you which pages, review sites and forums you need to be on.

Comparing prompt counts across tools is tricky. Some count a prompt once no matter how many engines check it; others count every engine check separately. Read the small print before you compare.
SE Visible by SE Ranking: best value for daily tracking
SE Visible gives you the most daily prompts per dollar of any tool here, with competitor share of voice, sentiment and cited sources. It's also built by an SEO company, so the data sits next to your rankings if you use SE Ranking too.
The SE Visible pricing section lists Basic from $89/mo ($71 billed annually) with 75 prompts tracked daily and 5 projects. The next plan is $189/mo ($151 annually) for 200 prompts and 10 projects, and the top self-serve plan is $399/mo ($319 annually) for 1,000 prompts and 30 projects. The plan cards list ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, while SE Ranking's own pricing page describes SE Visible as covering "AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, ChatGPT, Copilot and more." There's a 10-day free trial.
Two details we like. First, a prompt counts once no matter how many engines check it, so 200 prompts really means 200 prompts across every engine. Second, SE Visible says it collects answers through a real browser interface, not the model APIs, which should be closer to what your customers see. You can monitor in English, French, German, Dutch or Spanish.
Already need a full SEO suite? SE Ranking's Core plan ($129/mo) includes 25 AI prompts a day alongside rank tracking, audits and keyword research, so you may not need a separate tracker at first. Note that SE Ranking's older AI Search add-on is only available to accounts that bought it before October 29, 2026; new users get SE Visible.
Pros
- Most daily prompts for the price
- Prompts aren't multiplied by the number of engines
- Real-browser answers, competitor share of voice and sources
- Works with SE Ranking's SEO data
Cons
- No Perplexity, Claude or Copilot listed on SE Visible's plans
- Each extra tracked location uses another prompt
- Engine lists differ between pages (4 on the SE Visible plan cards, 5 on SE Ranking's pricing page, with Copilot); confirm in the trial which ones you get
Otterly.AI: cheapest way to start
Otterly.AI is the low-cost entry point, and it covers four engines on the cheapest plan, Perplexity and Copilot included.
The Otterly pricing page lists Lite at $29/mo for 15 prompts tracked daily across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. Standard is $189/mo for 100 prompts and Premium $489/mo for 400. Claude, Google AI Mode and Gemini cost extra, and 100 more prompts cost $99. Every plan includes unlimited countries and languages and a GEO audit. Annual billing saves 15%.
Pros
- Lowest entry price on this list
- Perplexity and Copilot included
- Daily tracking, unlimited countries
Cons
- 15 prompts is only enough for a first look
- Gemini and AI Mode are add-ons
- Big price jump from Lite to Standard
Peec AI: best for agencies and big teams
Peec AI is a dedicated tracker with unlimited users on every plan, which makes it a good fit for agencies sharing dashboards with clients.
On the Peec AI pricing page, Starter is $95/mo for 50 daily prompts, Pro $245/mo for 150 and Advanced $495/mo for 350, with multi-country tracking on Advanced. Self-serve plans let you choose 3 models (ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and others); Enterprise can track up to 13. Peec also runs a separate agency program for tracking many brands.
Pros
- Unlimited users on every plan
- Daily tracking from the first plan
- Agency setup for many brands
Cons
- Only 3 models on self-serve plans
- More expensive per prompt than SE Visible
- No traditional SEO data
Ahrefs Brand Radar: best for market research
Brand Radar works differently. Instead of only checking prompts you type in, it lets you look up any brand across a large database of prompts. Ahrefs puts it at 519 million. That's ideal for "who owns our category in AI answers?" questions.
The Brand Radar page lists the AI visibility index from $199/mo for a single platform and $699/mo for all models. If you only want your own prompts, custom prompt packages start at $50/mo, and Ahrefs' Lite, Standard and Advanced plans include some daily custom prompts. Ahrefs itself notes the index works best once your brand already appears in AI search.
Pros
- Research any brand without building prompt lists
- Huge prompt database, plus custom tracking
- Sits inside the Ahrefs suite
Cons
- Expensive for all platforms
- Less useful for new brands with no AI presence yet
- No free trial
Semrush AI Visibility: best if you already use Semrush
Semrush's AI Visibility toolkit brings prompt tracking, AI competitor analysis and prompt research into the Semrush account you may already have.
The Semrush AI pricing page lists the standalone toolkit at $99/mo per domain, billed annually, with 25 custom prompts tracked daily across ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity. Bundled plans start with SEO + AI Search Starter at $199/mo for 50 daily prompts. Extra users start at $45/mo.
Pros
- Perplexity included
- Prompt research based on Semrush's data
- One login if you already use Semrush
Cons
- Priced per domain
- 25 prompts at the base price
- Users cost extra
Surfer AI Search Analytics: best for content teams
Surfer's tracker shows when AI models mention you, which sources they cite and which competitors appear instead, then links that to Surfer's content tools.
Surfer's pricing lists AI Search Analytics at $82/mo billed yearly (about $95 monthly) for 50 prompts refreshed daily and 5 brand spaces. Each prompt covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews at no extra cost. Content plans include tracking too, but Standard tracks only 25 prompts weekly and on ChatGPT only. Surfer also says that in its own test of 1,000 prompts, API answers and app answers overlapped 30% at best, which is why it tracks app answers.
Pros
- Five engines per prompt at no extra cost
- Links tracking to content optimization
- MCP on Pro and above
Cons
- Best value needs yearly billing
- Standard's tracking is weekly and ChatGPT-only
- Not an SEO research suite
Profound: best for enterprises
Profound is built for big brands: up to 9 answer engines, prompt-volume data and enterprise reporting.
The Profound pricing page shows a 7-day trial with 50 prompts run daily on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and a custom Enterprise plan with up to 9 answer engines, including Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. We couldn't see self-serve paid prices for brands when we checked.
Pros
- Widest engine coverage
- Prompt-volume insights
- Built for large teams
Cons
- No published self-serve price for brands
- Overkill for small sites
- Sales process to get started
Writesonic: best for tracking plus content fixes
Writesonic pairs AI tracking with AI articles and site audits, so you can act on gaps in the same tool.
The Writesonic pricing page lists $79/mo billed annually (about $99 monthly) for 50 prompts tracked daily across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, 15 AI articles and 1 project. Higher tiers are $199/mo and $399/mo on annual billing.
Pros
- Tracking and content in one place
- Daily tracking from the first plan
- Free trial
Cons
- Three engines
- One project on the entry plan
- Best prices need annual billing
Cheaper ways to get some AI tracking
You may already pay for AI tracking without knowing it. Several SEO tools added small prompt allowances in 2026:
- SE Ranking Core: 25 prompts a day (pricing).
- Mangools: AI Search Watcher with 500 prompts on every plan (pricing).
- Moz Pro Standard: 150 prompts tracked weekly in GPT, Gemini and AI Mode.
- Serpstat Team: 1,500 AI visibility checks a month.
- NeuronWriter: 5 to 20 AI-monitored questions depending on plan.
- Ahrefs Lite: 150 AI prompt checks.
These are enough to learn which prompts matter. Move to a dedicated tracker when you need daily data on dozens of prompts or competitor share of voice.
How to set up AI visibility tracking
You'll get useful data in the first week if you set it up like this.
- Write 25 to 50 buyer prompts. Think like a customer: "best CRM for a 5-person agency," "X vs Y," "is X worth it." Skip prompts with your brand name at first; they inflate your score.
- Add 3 to 5 real competitors, the ones customers actually compare you with.
- Pick engines your customers use. For most B2B and SaaS, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews first.
- Group prompts by topic or funnel stage so you can see where you're strong and where you vanish.
- Check the cited sources weekly. If AI keeps citing one review site or Reddit thread, that's where to get mentioned next.
- Re-check monthly and change one thing at a time on your site, so you can tell what worked.
Which AI engines should you track?
Track the ones your customers use, not all of them. More engines cost more and add noise.
- ChatGPT is the default for most audiences. Every tool here covers it.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode matter if you already get Google traffic, because they sit on top of the results you rank in.
- Gemini is worth adding for audiences that live in Google's apps.
- Perplexity shows up a lot in tech and research-heavy niches. SE Visible doesn't list it on its plan cards; Otterly, Semrush and Surfer do.
- Copilot and Claude matter more in B2B and developer audiences. Otterly includes Copilot; Claude is an add-on or enterprise feature in most tools.
If you're unsure, ask ten customers which assistant they used last. That beats any industry chart.
What to do once you have the data
Tracking is the easy part. Improving the numbers is regular SEO and PR work, aimed at the sources AI engines read.
- Fix the pages AI already cites. If an assistant cites your pricing or comparison page, keep it current and make the key facts easy to quote: a clear definition, a price, a table.
- Get onto the sources that are cited instead of you. Review sites, "best X" lists, forums. Your tracker's cited-sources report tells you where.
- Answer the question in the first lines of each page. AI answers lean on clear, direct statements.
- Keep your brand facts consistent across your site, profiles and directories, so assistants don't mix you up with someone else.
- Watch sentiment. A mention that calls you "expensive" or "outdated" needs a different fix than no mention at all.
How we evaluated these tools
On October 31, 2026 we opened each vendor's official pricing page, rendering JavaScript where needed, and recorded price, billing terms, prompt limits, how prompts are counted, engines per plan, trials, seats and data-collection claims. We also read what searchers ask alongside "best AI visibility tools": free checkers, AI Overview trackers, and specific names like Peec AI, Otterly and Profound.
We haven't run a side-by-side accuracy test across all eight tools yet. Where a vendor makes a claim about its data (for example, browser-collected answers), we say it's the vendor's claim.
We earn a commission from some links (SE Ranking/SE Visible, Surfer). The others are plain links. Prices change often, so check before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI visibility tool?
It's software that sends a list of prompts to AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews on a schedule, then reports whether your brand is mentioned or cited, how often, and next to which competitors.
What is the best AI visibility tool?
For small and mid-size teams, SE Visible by SE Ranking offers the most daily prompts for the price: 75 prompts a day from $89/mo, or 25 a day included in SE Ranking's $129 Core plan. Enterprises with big budgets often look at Profound.
Is there a free AI visibility checker?
Mostly trials. SE Visible has a 10-day trial, SE Ranking a 14-day trial, Profound a 7-day trial with 50 daily prompts, and Otterly.AI and Peec AI offer free trials. You can also test prompts by hand in each assistant.
How many prompts do I need to track?
Start with 25 to 75 prompts that a real buyer would type: category questions, comparisons and "best X for Y" prompts. Add more once you know which ones move.
Can I track Google AI Overviews?
Yes. SE Visible, Semrush, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Otterly.AI, Profound, Surfer and Writesonic all list Google AI Overviews among the engines they track.
Do AI visibility tools use real AI answers?
It depends. SE Visible says it collects answers through a real browser interface, and Peec AI and Surfer say they capture app answers rather than API output. Ask each vendor how it collects data.
The bottom line
Start small. Use the prompt allowance in a tool you already have, or a cheap plan, to find the 25 to 50 prompts that matter for your business. When you're ready for daily data and competitor share of voice, SE Visible gives you the most prompts for the money.
