Rank tracking API: a clay results card, rising steps and a gear with a plug

Short answer

If you track up to a few thousand keywords and want charts, alerts and reports, buy: SE Ranking checks 2,000 keywords a day for $103.20/mo billed annually, and its API can feed your own dashboards. Build on a SERP API when rankings are raw data for your own product, or when you track tens of thousands of keywords. ScraperAPI covers Google and any other site in one API, with a free 7-day trial; our price table lists the per-search rates of the alternatives.

Two kinds of rank tracking API

People mean two different things by "rank tracking API", and the difference decides your costs.

SERP APIs send back a Google results page as JSON: positions, URLs, titles, ads, featured snippets and so on. You loop through the results and find your domain. Storage, history and charts are your job. DataForSEO, Serper and SerpApi work this way. General scrapers like ScraperAPI can return Google results too.

Rank tracker APIs sit on top of a full tracking tool. You add keywords once, the tool checks them on its schedule, and the API hands you positions and history. SE Ranking is one of these: the tracker does the work, and the API is a way out for your data.

What it costs to build: the API bill

An illustrative calculation, not a test. We assume one Google check per keyword per day for the top 10, one location, one device, 30 days a month. Prices are list prices from each vendor's page on November 4, 2026.

Keywords tracked dailySERPs a monthDataForSEO StandardDataForSEO LiveSerperSerpApi planScraperAPI plan

2,00060,000$36$120about $45 to $60Custom plan$299 Business

How we got there:

  • DataForSEO: $0.0006 per SERP in the Standard queue (around 5 minutes per task on average), $0.0012 Priority, $0.002 Live. Minimum top-up $50, and the balance doesn't expire.
  • Serper: $1.00 per 1,000 credits on the $50 pack, $0.75 on the $375 pack. Credits last 6 months.
  • SerpApi: monthly plans from $25 for 1,000 searches to $275 for 30,000. Above that you need a custom plan.
  • ScraperAPI: a Google search costs 25 credits, so Hobby covers 4,000 searches, Startup 40,000 and Business 120,000.

Add a second device or a second city and every number doubles. Track the top 100 instead of the top 10 and most APIs charge for each page of 10 results, so roughly ten times more. Google stopped honouring the old num=100 parameter in September 2025, which is why deep tracking got pricier across the board.

What it costs to build: everything else

The API bill is the small part. To get from JSON to a usable tracker you need:

  • A scheduler that sends the right keywords, locations and devices each day
  • A parser that finds your domain, handles sitelinks, local packs and AI Overviews, and copes when the format changes
  • A database for daily history, plus backups
  • Charts, filters, competitor views and alerts that someone will actually look at
  • Retries and monitoring for failed tasks
  • Someone who fixes it when it breaks

None of that is hard for a developer. It adds up, though. If it takes a few days to build and an hour or two a month to keep running, the developer time costs more than a year of a tracking tool at small volumes.

What it costs to buy: SE Ranking

SE Ranking is the tool we'd point most readers to. Core costs $129/mo or $103.20 billed annually and checks 2,000 keywords a day across 10 projects, with city and ZIP-level locations, competitor tracking and reports. Keyword research, site audits and backlink data come in the same plan.

For data in your own systems, there are three routes. Core includes 25,000 API credits and MCP access. The API add-on costs $45/mo billed annually ($48 monthly) for 3 million credits. And there's a standalone data API from $179/mo if you don't want the app. Full plan details are in our SE Ranking review.

At 2,000 daily keywords, SE Ranking costs about $3.4 a day. Building the same thing on DataForSEO costs about $1.20 a day in API fees, plus everything in the list above. The tool also covers the parts you'd otherwise skip, like local packs and history charts.

When building wins

  • Rankings are an input to your product. A pricing tool, a content system or an AI agent that reads SERPs as part of its job.
  • Volume is huge. At tens of thousands of keywords a day, $0.60 per 1,000 SERPs is hard to beat with any subscription.
  • You need the whole page. Raw SERP JSON gives you every result, ad and feature, not just your position.
  • You already run a scraping stack. If you pay for ScraperAPI for other sites, adding some Google checks costs nothing new to set up. See our ScraperAPI review for the credit maths.

Which API to build on

Short version, from list prices on November 4, 2026. The full comparison is in our cheapest SERP API guide.

  • DataForSEO: cheapest per SERP if you can wait a few minutes per task. The Live mode is still cheap at $2 per 1,000.
  • Serper: simplest to start, real-time answers, 2,500 free queries and no card.
  • SerpApi: the most polished parsing and docs, at a higher price. 250 free searches a month.
  • ScraperAPI: a good fit only if Google is a side job next to other scraping. 25 credits per search.

A sensible pattern for a small custom tracker: Standard queue for the daily run of all keywords, Live mode for the handful you check on demand.

How we compared

On November 4, 2026 we read the pricing pages of SE Ranking, DataForSEO, Serper, SerpApi and ScraperAPI, and DataForSEO's billing rules for result depth. The cost tables are our arithmetic from those list prices, under the assumptions stated above. We didn't build a tracker for this article and we don't publish accuracy or speed numbers we haven't measured.

The build checklist reflects the usual parts of an API-based tracker, not a project we timed, so we don't put hours or dollar figures on the dev work. We earn a commission from SE Ranking and ScraperAPI links; DataForSEO, Serper and SerpApi links are plain. See our affiliate disclosure.

Frequently asked questions

What is a rank tracking API?

It's an API that returns where a domain ranks in Google for a keyword, location and device. Some are raw SERP APIs that send back the whole results page and leave the position lookup to you. Others are rank tracker APIs that store keywords and history for you.

What's the cheapest way to track rankings through an API?

On list prices in November 2026, DataForSEO's Standard queue at $0.0006 per SERP is the cheapest we found. Tracking 500 keywords daily in the top 10 costs about $9 a month in API fees, before your own hosting and dev time.

Is it cheaper to build a rank tracker than to buy one?

The API calls are cheaper, the whole system often isn't. Once you count building the parser, storage, charts, location handling and maintenance, a tool like SE Ranking at $103.20/mo for 2,000 daily keywords is cheaper for most small teams.

Does SE Ranking have a rank tracking API?

Yes. Core plans include 25,000 API credits, an API add-on costs $45/mo billed annually, and a standalone data API starts at $179/mo. Check the current API docs for which endpoints your plan covers.

How do I track the top 100 instead of the top 10?

You request a deeper result set, and most SERP APIs bill per page of 10 results, so the top 100 costs about ten times as much as the top 10. Track the top 10 or 20 daily and the top 100 weekly to keep costs down.

The bottom line

Buy a tracker unless rankings feed your own software or your volume is very large. SE Ranking covers 2,000 daily keywords for about $103 a month and gives you an API when you need the data elsewhere. If you do build, start on DataForSEO or Serper and keep the top-100 checks weekly.
