Short answer
"AI SEO tool" now covers four different jobs: research, content, AI search visibility and automation. SE Ranking is the best single tool for small businesses because one plan covers all four at a fair price. Surfer is the best pick if content optimization is your main job, and Ahrefs has the strongest AI visibility research if you can afford it.

What counts as an AI SEO tool in 2026?
An AI SEO tool is software that uses AI to speed up SEO work, or that measures how AI search engines see your brand. In practice, that splits into four groups:
- Research suites with AI features: keyword clustering, AI summaries, AI-written briefs. SE Ranking, Semrush, Ahrefs.
- Content optimizers: score a draft against the pages that rank and help you write or rewrite. Surfer, Frase, Clearscope, NeuronWriter.
- AI visibility trackers: check whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews mention you. Most suites above now include one, and we compare the specialists in our AI visibility tools guide.
- Assistants and automation: ChatGPT, Claude and similar, connected to SEO data through MCP or an API.
You rarely need one of each. Most small sites do fine with one suite and, maybe, one content tool.

SE Ranking: best all-in-one AI SEO tool for small businesses
SE Ranking is the tool we'd pick if you can pay for only one. The base plan covers keyword research, daily rank tracking, audits, backlinks, AI-assisted content and AI visibility tracking, so you don't have to stitch five subscriptions together.
According to the official subscription page, Core costs $129/mo ($103.20 billed annually). It includes 10 projects, 2,000 keywords tracked daily, 250,000 audited pages a month, 25 content-marketing articles, 25,000 API credits with MCP access, and AI visibility tracking for 25 prompts a day across 5 AI engines. Growth ($279/mo, $223.20 annually) moves you to 30 projects, 5,000 keywords and 3 seats.
The MCP access is the quiet win here. It lets you plug SE Ranking data into an AI assistant and ask questions in plain English instead of clicking through reports.
If AI visibility becomes a big part of your work, SE Ranking also sells SE Visible on its own, from $89/mo for 75 daily prompts (more on that in our AI visibility tools guide).
Pros
- One plan covers research, tracking, content and AI visibility
- High keyword limits for the price
- API credits and MCP access on the base plan
- 14-day free trial
Cons
- AI content tools are simpler than Surfer's or Clearscope's
- 25 AI prompts a day is a starter amount; serious GEO work needs SE Visible
- Non-refundable payments, so test during the trial
Surfer: best for AI-assisted content optimization
Surfer is the content optimizer most SEO writers know. You give it a keyword, it shows you what the ranking pages cover, and its editor scores your draft as you write. It now tracks AI answers too.
The Surfer pricing page lists Standard at $99/mo billed yearly ($119 monthly) with 360 documents to create or optimize, content optimization, a plagiarism checker and 25 AI prompts tracked weekly. Pro ($182/mo yearly) adds internal linking, content gap ideas, a cannibalization report, MCP and 50 prompts tracked daily. If you only want AI tracking, AI Search Analytics is $82/mo billed yearly for 50 daily prompts. There's also a small Discovery plan at $49/mo yearly with 120 documents and the Surfy AI assistant.
One honest note from Surfer's own docs: on Standard the AI tracker covers ChatGPT only. The other plans cover ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews.
Pros
- Clear, writer-friendly editor
- AI visibility tracking built into content plans
- Good fit for teams producing content at volume
Cons
- Not a full SEO suite: thin on backlinks and technical audits
- Monthly billing costs noticeably more
- Standard's AI tracker covers ChatGPT only
Frase: best budget tool for briefs and GEO scoring
Frase builds content briefs from the top results, scores drafts for both SEO and GEO, and checks AI visibility on ChatGPT and Google AI. Its entry price is the lowest of the serious content tools.
The Frase pricing page lists Starter at $39/mo billed yearly ($49 monthly): 1 seat, 1 site, 10 articles and 50 audit pages a month. Professional is $103/mo yearly ($129 monthly) with 3 seats, 5 sites and 40 articles. Scale is $239/mo yearly. All plans have a 7-day trial with no card. A nice touch: Starter stops at its limits rather than billing you extra.
Pros
- Low entry price, no surprise overage on Starter
- SEO and GEO scores in one place
- Trial without a credit card
Cons
- 10 articles a month on Starter is tight
- Not a research or rank-tracking suite
- Extra seats cost $29/mo each
Clearscope: best for content teams
Clearscope is the "grown-up" content tool. Fewer bells, very clean reports, and unlimited users on every plan, which makes it popular with in-house teams and editors.
On the Clearscope pricing page, Essentials is $129/mo with 50 tracked queries, 20 Discoveries and 20 Drafts a month. Business is $399/mo with 300 tracked queries. Query tracking follows how ChatGPT and Gemini mention your brand. There's a 14-day free trial and no minimum contract on monthly plans.
Pros
- Unlimited users on every plan
- Simple, editor-friendly reports
- AI answer tracking for ChatGPT and Gemini
Cons
- Expensive for one person
- Only 20 drafts a month on both self-serve plans
- Card payment only unless you're on a custom yearly plan
NeuronWriter: cheapest content optimizer
NeuronWriter does much of what Surfer does (SERP-based term suggestions, content scoring, AI writing credits) for a fraction of the price. It's the tool many niche-site builders use.
The NeuronWriter pricing page starts at $23/mo for the Bronze plan: 2 projects, 25 documents, 15,000 AI credits and 5 AI-monitored questions. Gold ($69/mo) is the plan most teams will want, with unlimited team members, GSC, WordPress and Shopify integrations, and API/MCP access. Tiers go up to Diamond at $117/mo. An AI monitoring add-on from $9/mo adds questions and models (Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity). Yearly billing gives two months free, and there's a free trial.
Pros
- Very low entry price
- Unlimited team members from Gold
- Cheap add-on for AI answer monitoring
Cons
- Only 25 documents a month on Bronze
- Integrations and API start on Gold
Semrush and Ahrefs: best if budget isn't the issue
The two big suites have both turned into AI platforms. They're excellent, and they're priced like it.
Semrush sells its SEO plan at $139/mo, and AI search tracking with 50 daily prompts starts on the $199/mo Starter plan (pricing). A standalone AI Visibility toolkit costs $99/mo per domain billed annually for 25 prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity. Content optimization sits on Pro+ ($299/mo). You can try it for 7 days, and the free plan gives 10 reports a day.
Ahrefs starts at $129/mo for Lite, with 150 AI prompt checks a month (pricing). Its standout AI feature is Brand Radar, which researches brands across what Ahrefs says is 519 million+ prompts in its database. Brand Radar AI starts from $199/mo. Ahrefs doesn't do free trials or discounts.
Neither has an affiliate deal with us, so these are plain links. If either feels like too much, see our Semrush alternatives.
Pros
- The deepest data on the market
- Strong AI visibility research (especially Ahrefs Brand Radar)
- API and MCP access
Cons
- Expensive once you add users and AI tiers
- Lots of features most small sites never open
- Ahrefs has no trial and generally no refunds
- ChatGPT or Claude connected to SEO data
General AI assistants are great at outlines, rewrites, schema drafts and spreadsheet formulas. On their own, though, they have no live search volume, rankings or backlink data, so their keyword "numbers" are guesses.
The fix is to connect them to real data. SE Ranking (Core), Semrush (from Starter), Ahrefs, Surfer (Pro), Mangools and Serpstat all list MCP or API access on their pricing pages. With an MCP connection you can ask an assistant something like "which of my pages lost the most clicks this month?" and it pulls the answer from your tool.
Writesonic: best for GEO plus AI articles
Writesonic has moved from AI writer to GEO platform. It tracks your brand across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews and bundles AI articles and site audits to fill the gaps it finds.
According to the Writesonic pricing page, the entry plan is $79/mo billed annually (about $99 monthly) with 50 prompts tracked daily, 15 AI articles a month, 1 user and 1 project. The $199/mo tier (annual) gives 100 prompts, 25 articles and 2 users; the $399/mo tier gives 200 prompts and 50 articles.
Pros
- Tracking and content creation together
- Daily prompt tracking from the first plan
- Free trial
Cons
- Not a full SEO research suite
- Article limits are modest
- Annual billing needed for the best price
Bonus: turn articles into audio
If you publish long guides, an audio version can help people who'd rather listen. ElevenLabs is the text-to-speech tool we'd look at first: its pricing page lists a free plan with 10,000 credits a month, Starter at $6/mo and Creator at $22/mo. This isn't an SEO tool, so treat it as an extra, not a ranking factor.
Free AI SEO tools worth using
You can do a lot of AI SEO without paying anything:
- Google Search Console: real queries, clicks and positions for your own site.
- Ahrefs Free: limited Site Explorer and Site Audit for sites you own.
- Semrush free plan: 10 reports a day.
- The free tier of ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini: outlines, title ideas, FAQ drafts, schema markup.
- Trials: SE Ranking (14 days), Clearscope (14 days), Frase (7 days, no card), Semrush (7 days).
A simple free workflow: pull your pages with impressions but low clicks from Search Console, paste the queries into an assistant, ask for better titles and missing subtopics, then check the ideas against the live results by hand.
Which AI SEO tool for WordPress, Shopify or SaaS?
The platform matters less than people think. Every tool here works with any site, because research and tracking happen outside your CMS. What changes is how easily content flows back in.
- Shopify stores: product and category pages need keyword research and technical checks more than long articles. A suite like SE Ranking (audit plus rank tracking) does more good here than a content optimizer.
- SaaS: buyers ask ChatGPT and Perplexity "what's the best tool for X" all the time. Track those prompts. SE Ranking's built-in tracker is enough to start, and the specialists are in our AI visibility tools guide.
- Small local businesses: start free with Search Console and your Google Business Profile, then add one affordable suite.
What AI SEO tools can't do for you
They can't give you experience. Google's quality guidelines put real weight on first-hand experience, and pages with specific, checkable facts are easier for AI answers to quote. A tool can suggest subtopics; it can't tell your readers what happened when you actually tried the thing.
They also can't check their own facts. AI writers will happily invent a statistic or a price. Treat every number in an AI draft as wrong until you've found the source.
And they don't decide strategy. Which topics are worth your time, which pages to merge, when to stop chasing a keyword: that's still your call.
How to choose an AI SEO tool
Pick the job first, then the tool.
- You need one tool for everything: SE Ranking.
- You publish a lot of content: Surfer, or Frase or NeuronWriter on a budget.
- You have a team of writers: Clearscope.
- You care most about AI answers: a suite's built-in tracker to start, a specialist later. See AI visibility tools.
- You already pay for Semrush or Ahrefs: use their AI features before adding anything.
Before buying, check three limits: articles or documents per month, AI prompts per day, and seats. Those are where the cheap plans pinch.
How we evaluated these tools
On October 31, 2026 we read each vendor's official pricing page, rendering JavaScript where needed, and recorded prices, billing terms, trial rules, content limits, AI prompt limits and integrations. We grouped tools by the job they do, because comparing a content optimizer with a backlink suite on one score isn't useful. We also looked at what people ask alongside "best AI SEO tools": free options, small-business use and automation.
We earn a commission from some links (SE Ranking, Surfer, ElevenLabs). Semrush, Ahrefs, Frase, Clearscope, NeuronWriter and Writesonic links are plain links. Prices change often, so check before you buy.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI SEO tool?
For most small businesses it's SE Ranking, because one $129/mo plan covers research, rank tracking, audits, AI content and AI visibility tracking. For content optimization alone, Surfer is the stronger pick.
Are there free AI SEO tools?
Yes. Google Search Console and Ahrefs Free are free for your own site, Semrush has a free plan with 10 reports a day, and most paid tools offer a 7 to 14-day trial.
Can ChatGPT do SEO?
It can draft, outline and rewrite, but it has no live search volume, ranking or backlink data. Connect it to an SEO tool through MCP or an API, or use it next to one.
Will AI SEO tools replace SEO specialists?
No. They speed up research and drafting, but someone still has to choose topics, check facts, add first-hand experience and decide what to publish.
What's the difference between AI SEO and GEO?
AI SEO means using AI to do SEO work. GEO (generative engine optimization) means getting your brand mentioned and cited in AI answers like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Many tools now do both.
Does Google penalize AI-written content?
Google's guidance says it rewards helpful content however it's produced, and acts against content made mainly to manipulate rankings. Thin, unedited AI text tends to fail that test.
The bottom line
Don't buy an "AI SEO tool." Buy a tool for the job you do most. For most small businesses that job is "everything, on a small budget," and SE Ranking handles it best. Add Surfer if content is your engine, and look at a specialist tracker once AI answers start sending you real leads.
